The interface for setting preferences has been updated for all Star Assessments. If you are interested in setting preferences or have set preferences in the past, you may want to review and verify your preferences are set to your desired specifications. Detailed information regarding setting preferences can be found in the Help files (question mark) located in the upper right corner of your Renaissance Place Home page.

Star Reading Spanish

What's new?

IRLs now available! - Instructional Reading Levels (IRLs) are now available in the Help Files for Star Reading Spanish as well in the following link http://doc.renlearn.com/KMNet/R60757.pdf.

  • IRL is a criterion-referenced score that is the highest reading level at which a student is 80% proficient (or higher) at comprehending material with assistance.
  • As a criterion-referenced score, IRL is not the same as the norm-referenced Grade Equivalent score, but the two correspond somewhat fairly at some grade levels.
  • If an educator wants to know what level of instructional materials a student should be using for ongoing classroom instruction, the IRL is the preferred score.

Star Early Literacy

What's new?

New - Demonstration Video. Back by popular demand, educators have the option to set the Demonstration video and the Hands-on practice activity preferences in Star Early Literacy.

Educators can choose to have the demonstration video and hands-on practice shown until the student has completed his/her first Star Early Literacy Assessment, or choose to always have it turned off. To set these preferences, Click on Early Literacy Assessments > Preferences > Edit.

By default the video will be shown until the student has completed his/her first Star Early Literacy Assessment.

Teachers: if you would like to show the demonstration video to your entire class/group any time prior to taking the Star Early Literacy Assessment, you can do so by accessing the video in the Help files (question mark), located in the upper right corner of your Renaissance Place Home page.

Hands-on Practice. The hands-on practice provides a few questions to determine whether or not a student understands how to answer questions using the mouse, keyboard, or tablet. Two preference setting options are available:

  • Available until the first test is completed
  • Always off

The default is set to be available until the first test is completed.

Star Custom Transition Tips

What's new?

New - Watch the Renaissance Star Custom video (above in the video section) to see this new feature.

New - Star Custom now supports authoring for “other” subjects in addition to reading and math.  You can create and administer assessments for any subject and review a percent correct score for each assessment administered.

New - Star Custom also provides updated templates for authoring items, making it much easier for you to create your own tests items and tests.

New - The ability to add multi-class assignments.

  • District Admin: Can assign out to all schools, classes, groups that they have access to. Can also assign out to entire grades at multiple schools
  • School Admin/Librarian: Can assign out to multiple classes/groups at their school as well as entire grades at their school
  • Teacher: Can assign out to all their classes at once. Can also assign out to an entire grade level but it only applies to the students in their classes

New - Plan Assessment enhancements: Educators have the opportunity to name their lesson plans allowing for better organization and differentiation between assessment plans that display on the Star Custom home page.

In addition, educators can choose to add their assessments to an existing rolling assessment plan, or create a new rolling assessment plan allowing for a cleaner and more organized view of the Star Custom home page.

A library of fixed-form tests for reading and math skills.

Increased item bank coverage

Ability to view group data in reports and select individual groups when planning assessments

Enhanced reporting, including the ability to track standards mastery and student progress

Item import: QTI items can be individually imported (dragged and dropped) directly into Star Custom

Ability to import summative assessment results via Excel for PARCC, Smarter Balanced, and ACT Aspire, allowing users to compare multiple data points

Students will also be able to see their results immediately after completing a Star Custom assessment. This helps students understand their performance and adds motivation and accountability for their own learning.

Additional changes

New - Dashboards. The Dashboard views have been extended to support viewing scaled scores using any of the following scales: Lexile, PARCC, Smarter Balanced, Star Enterprise, and Star Unified. Additionally, it will now be possible to view summative sub-domain scores in the Outcomes Views.

Star Early Literacy scores and benchmarks will display in the top section of the Mastery View when only Star Early Literacy scores (no Star Reading scores) are in context.

Summative scores will be displayed along with Star scores in the Mastery View.

Based on your implementation of Star, you may want to know about some additional changes. If you can answer “Yes” to any of these questions, please select the question to learn more.

New - Do your students use the Star iOS app to take assessments?

The option of using Renaissance Star apps on iPad® will no longer be supported.

Soon, we are planning to upgrade Star to a new interface, in order to deliver more powerful data to our customers. Due to this upgrade, the Star iOS app functionality will be retired indefinitely. iOS app functionality for Star Early Literacy will be retired August –September 2016. The Star Reading and Star Math iOS app functionality will be retired mid-October 2016.

The option of using Renaissance Star apps on iPad® will no longer be supported.

Do you use the Core Progress Reading and Math learning progressions to help identify skills your students are ready to work on?

Core Progress Reading and Core Progress Math state learning progressions are updated annually to refresh skill difficulty values, domain scores, and skill area scores based on the most recent data.

The dashboard view now includes updated Star Reading, Star Math, and Star Early Literacy domain scores, based on your state standards.

The Star Reading Diagnostic Report and the Star Math Diagnostic Report include the same dashboard domain scores, as well as skill area scores that provide standards-agnostic detail.

The Star Early Literacy Diagnostic Report continues to provide scores on the standards-agnostic sub-domains, which are different from the standards-based domains in the dashboard view, and the same skills-sets around early learning.

Have your state standards learning progressions changed?

For states that are assessing new standards this school year, Core Progress learning progressions have been updated to reflect those new standards.

Educators in Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Mississippi will see updated learning progressions for both reading and math. Educators in Nebraska and Utah will see updated learning progressions for math only.

Additionally, PreK standards and skills for Reading have been developed for California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

Updates will occur automatically in the software when they are available.

Have you created Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs) in Star Custom?

Support for Technology Enhanced items will be removed from the product, and these items will not be retained in tests you have administered. We are working towards adding Technology Embedded items in a near term update and will update you on this progress over time.

For educators who have used Star Custom in the past, your existing tests and test items will continue to be available, as Renaissance will be doing the background work to bring these over from the old platform.

Will the new Star Reading Spanish and Star Math Spanish be available at the high school level?

We are still in the process of collecting the necessary data for Star Reading Spanish and Star Math Spanish at the high school level. We will inform you when they become available at the high school level.
