Common Core State Standards

Establishing high standards for all students

In June 2010 Common Core State Standards were released for English language arts/Literacy and mathematics. A primary goal was to establish a unified set of standards for all students, regardless of the state where they happen to reside, to better prepare them for the demands of college and careers in a global economy.

There from the very beginning

As the movement to create the Common Core State Standards was getting underway, Renaissance Learning was already reviewing and learning from the work of independent educational organizations that informed the CCSS. Throughout the development of the CCSS we carefully monitored each stage from draft form through to the final release. As a result, Renaissance Learning is strongly aligned to the CCSS and uniquely positioned to help your school or district with this important initiative.

"The ultimate goal [of the standards] is for all American children to graduate from high school ready for college, career pathways, and success in a global economy."

Renaissance Learning and the CCSS

At Renaissance Learning, we believe that if U.S. schools are to meet the objectives of these standards, they will only be able to do so through the following three broad approaches:

  • Personalized Assessment - Educators need powerful and innovative assessment tools that tailor themselves to students regardless of where they are performing. These tools must efficiently provide reliable, valid, and actionable information to inform instruction. Our STAR computer-adaptive assessments are among the most efficient and most widely used tests in the world and they include CCSS-aligned items and CCSS-specific reports.

  • Personalized Instruction - Renaissance Learning products provide some of the most viable models in differentiation in education. What's more, our Core Progress learning progressions take the Common Core State Standards to the next level by going beyond assessment to provide teachers with prerequisite skills and specific, actionable information to meet students where they are, know what the next steps are, and then be able to move them towards meeting the CCSS.

  • Personalized Practice - While students spend hours practicing sports and musical instruments, very few spend an equivalent amount of time practicing reading, math, and writing. If our nation is to continue as a world leader, this must change. For more than 25 years, Renaissance Learning has led the call for more substantial reading, math, and writing practice and is the industry leader in providing tools to monitor and manage the essential practice students need for ultimate success.

Strongly aligned to the CCSS

Renaissance Learning maintains a team of professionals that continually monitors and studies standards. In addition, our experts use a rigorous process developed and refined in consultation with Northwest Regional Educational Laboratories (now Education Northwest) and Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) center to produce accurate alignments based on best practices in the industry.
