The importance of assessing in both languages

The importance of assessing in both languages

Imagine you have a new student, a Spanish-speaking English Learner. If you only test him in English, you won’t necessarily get a complete picture of the skills he has developed in his native language.

Now imagine that you also assess the student in Spanish. This will provide you with insight into what he knows and can do in both languages, so you can provide instruction and support to help him reach his full potential.

Reading and Math

Three Star Assessments are available in both English and Spanish: Star Early Literacy for grades K–3, Star Reading for grades K–12, and Star Math for grades 1–12. With Star Assessments, you can get a consistent measure of achievement and growth, in English and in Spanish, across all grades!

Presenters: Doris Chavez-Linville and Carol Johnson

Students in bilingual and dual language programs graduate from high school headed to the career or college of their dreams. One of the main reasons for this success is the development of biliteracy. This session will explore the ways in which Renaissance supports biliteracy in bilingual and dual language programs.

How Are the Goals of Language Development and Language Arts Different When Teaching Spanish Reading?

Presenters: Doris Chavez-Linville, Carol Johnson, and Samuel Aguirre (WIDA)

Classroom teachers and school leaders in settings where Spanish is a target language constantly negotiate ways to drive Spanish language development (SLD) and Spanish language arts (SLA) standards. In a collaborative presentation, WIDA and Renaissance present ways to meet SLD and SLA goals, specifically those associated with reading, by looking at similarities and differences of the two.
