Develop independent readers with new ELA Hints in Freckle
Students often struggle with challenging passage-based questions during independent ELA practice. This can lead to frustration and disengagement when they don’t have immediate access to help.
Freckle’s new ELA Hints deliver question-specific guidance for passage-based Focus Skills launching initially for grades 3–5 and expanding to be inclusive of grades 2–8 throughout Summer 2025. When students encounter difficulty, they can simply click the “Show Hint” button below the question to receive assistance. The hint provides clear guidance while highlighting relevant text in the passage that students should consider.
If a student answers incorrectly, hints appear automatically, providing immediate scaffolding without teacher intervention. Students can toggle hints on and off as needed, putting them in control of their learning experience:

These contextual hints bridge the gap between students abandoning a challenging question and receiving too much assistance. For teachers, this means reduced intervention during independent practice while students learn to understand reading on their own.
This new Freckle ELA capability aligns with Renaissance’s commitment to helping educators “See Every Student” by providing personalized, in-the-moment support that adapts to individual needs. Just like our previously introduced Keyword Vocabulary feature, Freckle’s ELA Hints remove barriers to comprehension and encourage students to progress independently.
