New approvals position Renaissance to support Texas districts with early literacy and numeracy assessments and grades 3–8 alternate interim assessments beginning in the 2027–28 school year
BLOOMINGTON, MN (Nov. 5, 2026) — Renaissance, a global leader in pre-K–12 education technology, today announced that its Star Assessments have received approval from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for two significant statewide assessment initiatives beginning with the 2027–28 school year. The approvals span K–3 early literacy and numeracy assessments and grades 3–8 beginning-of-year (BOY) and middle-of-year (MOY) alternate interim assessments.
Together, these approvals expand Renaissance’s ability to support Texas educators with a comprehensive portfolio of reading and mathematics assessments spanning kindergarten through grade 8—providing timely, actionable insights to help educators understand student needs, monitor progress, and inform instruction.
Supporting early literacy and numeracy across grades K–3
For conditional approval of K–3 early literacy and numeracy assessments, Renaissance offerings include:
- Early Literacy: Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, Star CBM Reading, and Star CBM Lectura
- Early Numeracy: Star Math and Star CBM Math
The TEA is identifying commissioner-approved early literacy and numeracy instruments aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for kindergarten through grade 3. Instruments ultimately placed on the commissioner’s approved lists will be eligible for statewide use beginning in the 2027–28 school year.
Expanding assessment options for grades 3–8
Renaissance also received approval for Star Reading and Star Math as grades 3–8 BOY/MOY alternate interim assessments associated with Texas House Bill 8.
House Bill 8 replaces the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) with the Student Success Tool (SST), Texas’s new assessment program, beginning in the 2027–28 school year. As part of the transition, the TEA has identified alternative BOY and MOY assessments to help districts assess student performance and progress throughout the school year.
“These approvals represent an important opportunity for Renaissance to continue to support Texas districts as they navigate a new statewide assessment landscape,” said Scott Montgomery, Vice President of Government Affairs at Renaissance. “With a connected portfolio of reading and mathematics assessments spanning kindergarten through grade 8, we can help educators gain meaningful insights into student learning, identify needs earlier, monitor growth, and make more informed instructional decisions. Ultimately, it’s about giving educators the information they need to help every student reach their full potential.”
