Alabama districts can use Star to meet universal screening requirements of the Alabama Literacy Act

Bloomington, MN (January 9, 2026) – Renaissance, a global leader in pre-K–12 education technology, is pleased to announce that Star Assessments have been approved by the Alabama Department of Education as part of the Alabama Literacy Task Force’s vetted list of K–3 universal literacy screeners. The list of approved screeners was created in accordance with the Alabama Literacy Act.

The approved Renaissance solutions include:

  • Star CBM
  • Star CBM Lectura
  • Star Early Literacy
  • Star Alfabetización temprana (formerly Star Early Literacy Spanish)
  • Star Reading
  • Star Lectura (formerly Star Reading Spanish)

These assessments meet the requirements of the Alabama Literacy Act, including:

  • Universal screening and diagnostic capabilities for K–3 students.
  • Progress monitoring at least monthly.
  • Screening for all characteristics of dyslexia (letter naming, letter sounds, nonsense word reading, accuracy, and spelling).
  • Measurement of phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, decoding, encoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
  • Integration with instructional support and timely reporting to teachers, administrators, and parents.
