The Art and Science of Goal Setting

Run time: 55:30

Too often, districts implement a Response to Intervention (RTI) model without having a clear endpoint in mind. But if we don’t set specific, realistic, and measurable goals, how do we know whether an intervention is truly effective?

In this webinar, RTI expert and author Denise Gibbs shares practical advice for setting the right goals for intervention students—and for avoiding common mistakes. You’ll gain a clear understanding of the two types of goals you should set, as well as:

  • How to use goals as roadmaps for student learning
  • When to adjust the pace of instruction to best meet student needs
  • How to determine whether students are progressing appropriately
  • What to look for when choosing an intervention program

Denise Gibbs, EdD, is a national RTI consultant and the author of four books, including Rising to Dyslexia Challenges Through Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and RTI in Middle and High School. She was formerly a professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and is now Director of the Alabama Scottish Rite Foundation Learning Centers.

Dr. Gibbs was appointed by the Alabama State Board of Education to the Dyslexia Advisory Council, and she works with leaders at the Alabama Department of Education in the development and continual updating of the Alabama Dyslexia Resource Guide.
