Results are important for every administrator. They need ensure that their programs are addressing student needs as well as fiscal accountability requirements—in other words, producing a strong return on investment (ROI). St. Landry Parish Schools implemented myON® by Renaissance® in their after-school programs, funded by federal 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants, to help meet both goals.

Program Director Angela Cassimere, who also serves as St. Landry’s Supervisor of Instruction, School Choice and School Improvement, launched myON during the 2014–15 school year in 10 program sites. Some 405 students in the parish with the highest academic needs attend for two hours a day, four afternoons a week. A portion of that time is dedicated to literacy and myON—with outstanding results.

“Before myON, we were using a hodge-podge of materials, but not seeing immediate results in reading,” Cassimere said. “And they weren’t fun for the students. Our students love myON, as do the teachers! The end result is that children are going to improve with myON. I expect that we are going to produce results this year that are even better than last year.” 

Their strong implementation model includes effective staff development and program monitoring. “We want to be sure that myON is used with fidelity,” Cassimere explained. Three site coordinators on her team monitor usage and student performance, following up with teachers to identify and address the issues when there are gaps.

A key part of their plan includes expanding student use of myON outside of the after school program time.

“We are looking forward to doing more reading challenges during school breaks so there will be no more lulls for students with myON,” she said. Their program also extends into the summer, when students attend for four and a half hours a day, Monday through Friday, for three weeks.

With their six-year grant coming to an end this year, St. Landry is working to earn another cycle of funding and their myON data will be an important piece. “We are always looking to get results, but they need to be good results,” Cassimere said. “This is a competitive grant and we need data to have a fighting chance of being awarded again in the next round.”
