Download the Fall report

How Kids Are Performing is based on insights from millions of student assessments. The report explores key questions, including:

  • How has the pandemic truly impacted students’ reading and math performance at each grade level?
  • Is the impact reflected in growth outcomes?
  • Does the impact vary by student subgroup? Have existing achievement gaps widened?
  • Can we interpret the pandemic’s impact in instructional terms?
How Kids Are Performing Fall 2020

Tracking the Impact of COVID-19 on Reading and Mathematics Achievement

State-level trends

To estimate the pandemic’s impact on student learning in fall, we drew on a sample of over 5 million students in grades 1–8 from all 50 states plus DC who took Star Early Literacy, Star Reading, or Star Math assessments during both Fall 2019 and Fall 2020.

Below, state-level summaries are provided for two of the metrics included in the report. Summaries are based on the students who took the fall Star Assessments and are not necessarily representative of the state population.

Notes

1.

This presentation summarizes selected How Kids Are Performing analyses by state and subject, relying on historical records as well as data from August through mid-October 2020. Refer to the national report for details on methods, samples, and limitations. For more information about the Star Assessments, start here.

2.

Not all states have been included in this presentation due to small sample sizes. We excluded states if there were fewer than 10 schools and/or fewer than 2,000 students per subject. Please also note that the state-level results presented here may not be representative of any state’s student population.

3.

Percentages may not total 100 due to rounding.
