Chief Executive Officer
Daniel Hamburger joined Renaissance with more than 20 years of education experience. He recently served as the President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Adtalem Global Education (formerly known as DeVry Education), a global provider of educational services. Prior, he served as Chairman and CEO of Indeliq, a SaaS-based education company backed by Accenture Technology Ventures and President of WW Grainger's Internet Commerce group. Hamburger earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and his bachelor's and master's degrees in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan.
Chief Marketing Officer
Tracy joined Renaissance with more than 20 years of experience developing modern, performance-driven marketing programs, building successful digital marketing strategies, and optimizing complex marketing operations. Most recently, she was chief marketing officer at Tealium, Inc., where she elevated its niche tag management system to a comprehensive customer data platform. Prior, she was SVP of marketing for CA Technologies and VP of Marketing at NetApp. Tracy has a B.A. Communications from Mills College, Oakland, CA, and a M.A. Writing (MTPW) from Northeastern University.
Chief Operating Officer
Mike joined Renaissance with more than 30 years of experience and recently served as our interim CEO. Prior to Renaissance, Mike was senior vice president and general manager of Pearson’s K–12 reading and math businesses. During his 12 years at Pearson, Mike led the company’s transition from traditional print to emerging digital platforms, taking on increasingly challenging roles and engineering significant growth. Prior to joining Pearson, he held senior financial and general management positions at BigChalk, The Food Network, and Primedia, Inc. Mike earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and subsequently became a CPA.
Chief Product Officer
Marc has a record of delivering first-to-market, award-winning products and building new businesses at leading technology companies and holds 17 technology patents. Most recently, Marc served as VP of Product and VP of Strategy at TripAdvisor, helping exceed $1B in revenue and over 350 million unique monthly users globally. Prior, Marc was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Products at Cartera Commerce, a company that pioneered solutions for banks, retailers, and airlines. Marc has an MBA from University of California at Berkeley and Bachelor degree from Williams College.
Executive Vice President of Sales
Samir Joglekar came to Renaissance from the Carnegie- and Gates Foundation-sponsored inBloom, Inc. There he served as senior vice president of Sales and Business Development. Prior to joining inBloom, he was senior vice president of Worldwide Sales for eInstruction. Early in his career, Samir worked for Apple as a sales engineer and account manager. At Dell, he extended his sales career and rose to various sales leadership roles in Europe and the US. He received his BS in electrical engineering from The George Washington University and went on to graduate studies in biomedical engineering at The Johns Hopkins University.
Chief People Officer
Kim Mitchell leads our people-focused activities at Renaissance – from recruiting and onboarding to development and total rewards. She brings deep experience in making organizations’ Human Resources and Talent Management functions a strategic capability and differentiator. Kim joined Renaissance from Centura Health where she led the non-profit hospital system’s Talent Management organization. She also worked in senior Human Resources roles at First Data Corporation, and led her own Talent Management practice, VeriCarta Consulting. Kim earned her master’s degree in education from Colorado State University, and her bachelor of arts from Regis University.
Chief Strategy Officer
John brings more than 25 years of global experience in business strategy, operations, finance, and acquisitions. Most recently, he served in leadership roles at Adtalem Global Education, including as president of Adtalem’s Becker Professional Education division and senior vice president of corporate development and strategy. Prior, John served as chief financial officer and vice president of business development at Indeliq, and vice president, business development for W.W. Grainger’s Internet commerce unit. He has a master’s in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Washington.
Special Advisor to the CEO
Julian has more than 25 years of experience leading the creation and execution of new market strategies. He is a recognized industry expert on technology in emerging markets and the future of digital entertainment, information services, and analytics. Before joining Renaissance, Julian ran a Silicon Valley based investment and consulting company. Prior, he led executive teams of Outerwall Inc, Rovi Corp and Neustar Inc, as the Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Corporate Development. Julian holds a BA and an MA in Law from Oxford University, and a Diploma in Negotiation from Harvard University.
Chief Technology Officer
Mark A. Angel most recently served as general manager and vice president of Multi-Channel Solutions for Nuance Communications, Inc. Prior to that, he was executive vice president and chief technology officer of KANA Software and was general manager and chief technology officer for Kanisa Inc., a subsidiary of Ernst & Young, LLP. Angel was the founder and chief executive officer of Papyrus Technology, a Silicon Valley start-up company, which grew to become a global leader in graphical trading workstations and is now owned by Ernst & Young, LLP.
President of myON
Todd is an education technology innovator with more than 25 years of experience. Most recently, he helped create myON, a personalized literacy platform that is part of Renaissance’s literacy portfolio. Previously, Todd served as Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for PLATO Learning, President and COO of Learning Elements, and Education Program Director for MCI WorldCom. Todd also spent eight years as a technology leader in schools. In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Lamp Lighter Visionary Award by the Association of American Publishers and was named the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient by SIIA Company CODiE Awards.
Director of Product Strategy, myON
Gail brings more than 25 years of product strategy, business development, and operations experience in the education technology industry to Renaissance from myON. Over the years, she has worked with diverse standard groups, such as MARBI and the U.S. Department of Education Technical Working Group, and is a past board member at SIIA-ETIN and co-chair for the technical and development committee. Prior to working with myON, Gail served in product management roles at Capstone and Nichols Advanced Technologies and Sagebrush.
Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs
A dedicated career focused on the needs of students and educators gives Paula O’Gorman deep knowledge of K–12 education. Her understanding of key issues and passion for education, combined with her business acumen, make Paula a strong contributor on the leadership team. She has also served Renaissance in a senior vice president capacity in research and development, content development, and government affairs. Paula joined Renaissance in 1999 as part of the company’s acquisition of Humanities Software, where she was CEO at the time. During her nine years at Humanities, she also held key roles in sales, marketing, and product and content development. Prior to that, she was a special education teacher. Paula earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and physiology from the University of Minnesota.
Gene M. Kerns
Vice President and Chief Academic Officer
Gene M. Kerns, EdD, is a third-generation educator with teaching experience from elementary through the university level, in addition to his K–12 administrative experience. He is currently chief academic officer for Renaissance. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Longwood College in Virginia and a doctor of education degree from the University of Delaware. He is the co-author of two books: Informative Assessment: When It’s Not About a Grade and Unlocking Student Talent: The New Science of Developing Expertise.
Managing Director – International
Erez has extensive experience in international education and heads international operations for Renaissance. He came to Renaissance from Kaplan Inc., where he had several roles including Senior Vice President, New Business Initiatives and Managing Director, Kaplan International English. He led the growth of Kaplan’s English business to become an industry leader with 45 colleges providing English language courses, study abroad programs, and unforgettable experiences. Erez previously set up a British education company in China and has a background in corporate law practice. Erez holds an LLB from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an MBA from INSEAD.
Vice President of Psychometrics, Research, and Learning Science
Dianne has extensive experience in creating innovative solutions for education assessment and measurement, including formative, interim and summative assessments. She most recently held the position of SVP at ProExam where she led the complete redesign of the analysis, scoring and reporting areas. Prior to that, she was the General Manager at ETS, where she was responsible for the Statistical Analysis and Psychometric Research areas for K-12, and served as a Senior Research Scientist at CTB/McGraw-Hill. Dianne earned her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. She also holds a bachelor of science of nursing and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Alberta.
James R. McBride
James R. McBride, PhD, is vice president and chief psychometrician for Renaissance. He has been instrumental in the practical application of item response theory and has conducted test development and personnel research for a variety of organizations. He is co-editor of a leading book on the development of computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and has authored numerous journal articles, professional papers, book chapters, and technical reports.
Catherine Close, Ph.D., is a psychometrician supervisor at Renaissance where she researches, develops, and evaluates the Star computerized adaptive assessments. Catherine applies her extensive background in statistics and test theories in ensuring that the Star assessments meet professional standards for reliability and validity for use in grades K–12. Before joining Renaissance in 2011, Catherine researched educational measurement issues and taught graduate-level statistics courses at the University of Minnesota where she also earned a doctorate in educational psychology with an emphasis on statistics and psychometrics. Catherine has co-authored research articles and published in peer-reviewed journals of measurement.
Michelle Meller joined Renaissance as General Counsel, responsible for providing legal perspective and guidance across all functional areas. In addition, Michelle serves as the Corporate Secretary. Michelle’s previous role was as Senior Legal Counsel for HERE, a global digital location services, software and technology company. She handled the company’s global merger, acquisition and divestiture activities and was the lead attorney for HERE’s business in China, global tax and finance groups, and human resources. Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science from Loyola University in Chicago, and her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law.
Board of Directors
Tarim Wasim is a partner at Hellman & Friedman. In addition to serving on the board of directors of Renaissance, he is a director of Internet Brands. He was active in the firm’s investment in Artisan Partners Limited Partnership. He was also formerly a director of AlixPartners, LLP. Prior to joining Hellman & Friedman in 2005, Mr. Wasim was employed by Bain Capital in Boston and worked as a consultant in the Boston office of Bain & Company. Mr. Wasim graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar.
Anupam Mishra is a managing director at Hellman & Friedman. In addition to serving on the board of directors of Renaissance, he is chairman of the board of Applied Systems, Inc., and a director of Ellucian. He was formerly a director of Kronos Inc., Intergraph Corporation, and GeoVera Insurance Group Holdings, Ltd. He was also active in the firm’s investment in PARIS RE Holdings Ltd. Prior to joining Hellman & Friedman in 2004, Mr. Mishra was employed by Bain Capital in San Francisco, Nextset Software in Palo Alto, California, and The Boston Consulting Group in Los Angeles. Mr. Mishra graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Gene Frantz is a general partner at CapitalG. Previously, he was a partner at TPG Capital for 13 years, where he was responsible for multiple technology and telecom investments. In addition to serving on the board of directors of Renaissance, he is also a director of Emulex and served on the boards of Alltel, Avaya, Freescale Semiconductor, MEMC Electronic Materials, Network General, Paradyne Networks, Seagate Removable Storage Solutions, and SMART Modular Technologies. Mr. Frantz has a BS from the University of California at Berkley and an MBA from Stanford Business School.
John Katzman is the founder and CEO of The Noodle Companies. He also serves on the boards of Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the National Association of Independent Schools, and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Prior to founding Noodle, Mr. Katzman founded and ran both The Princeton Review and 2U. He is often invited to speak on topics related to education and the measurement of academic achievement. He received his BA from Princeton University in 1981.
Matt Eisen is a principal at Hellman & Friedman. Mr. Eisen joined H&F in 2012 and re-joined the Firm in 2016 after business school. He currently also serves on the board of directors of ABRA Auto Body & Glass and was previously active in the Firm’s investment in Internet Brands and Ellucian. Prior to H&F, Mr. Eisen was employed by the Media and Communications Group of Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York. Mr. Eisen graduated magna cum laude from Yale College and earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar.
Deepak Advani is a partner at Hellman & Friedman and is focused on helping the Firm drive value by improving the operational effectiveness of H&F’s portfolio companies, with a particular focus on software & technology. Prior to H&F, he spent nearly 20 years in the software and technology sector with IBM. He also served as the Global Chief Marketing Officer and SVP of eCommerce for Lenovo. Mr. Advani graduated from Michigan State University, earned a MS in Computer Engineering at Wright State University, and earned an MBA from University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business.
